Call for applications: MA and PhD in Global Studies
The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) at Addis Ababa University and the Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) at Leipzig University are accepting applications to the MA and PhD joint degree programmes in Global Studies.
10 April 2018
Since 2012, the GESI and IPSS have been offering an interdisciplinary two-year MA and a three-year PhD programme in the field of Global Studies with a special emphasis on peace and security in Africa. The intention of the MA programme is to qualify African students and junior researchers for employment, among others, in international organizations, in the field of conflict management, prevention and resolution as well as peace building. It also aims to qualify future lecturers, scholars and researchers for the rapidly expanding higher education sector in Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries and to enable these future elites to “think globally”. The PhD programme trains junior researchers and professionals in globalisation research. It qualifies them for employment, among others, in international organizations, in the field of conflict management, prevention and resolution and as future lecturers, scholars and researchers for the rapidly expanding higher education sector in Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries - enabling these future elites to “think globally”.
Global Studies – as a combination of social and cultural as well as historical approaches to the study of modern and contemporary globalization processes and the comparison of world regions – offers the scientific basis to develop an understanding for the dynamics of peace and security in Africa. Since Africa is faced with global challenges in particular ways, the study programme intends to pay special attention to regional perspectives on globalization processes and – in light of the continent’s specific contemporary challenges – to the multifaceted aspects of peace and security in Africa.
The subject of “Peace and Security in Africa” will be integrated into the study programme’s broader context of comparative analyses of global entanglements both historically and contemporarily. Additionally, the theoretical and methodological foundations of peace and security will be profoundly expanded upon by embedding them into the debate on global actors and strategies, new regionalisms and the changing position of nation-states have within the emerging world order. African perspectives will be systematically juxtaposed with European and other region-based perspectives.

The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) was founded in 2007 by the Addis Ababa University (AAU) to impart knowledge and conduct research in the field of peace and security with a regional focus on the Horn of Africa. It is one of the five Centres of Excellence at AAU and qualifies students in conflict prevention, management and resolution, as well as peace building and promotes values of democratic and peaceful society. It is the first academic institution in Africa that was able to gain the support of the African Union (AU) as a partner in planning and implementing one of its master’s programmes, “Managing Peace and Security in Africa” for senior executives of the AU, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the emerging African security community.
The Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) at Leipzig University (UL) is devoted to graduate teaching and research in the field of Globalisation and Europeanisation. It works at the cross-roads of several disciplines and aims at an analytical interpretation of the global condition in which we live. The Institute is among the pioneers of graduate education in the relatively new field of Global Studies. Being the head of a European University Consortium since 2005, it offers (among others) a successful international M.A. programme, the “European Master Global Studies”, in collaboration with universities all around the world.
